The
exciting thing about the 2014 FIFA World Cup
is that it’s the first one to be played with Goal Line technology, ever! This
means that the referees will have access to electronic devices which will help
determine if the ball has fully crossed the finish line, showing whether or not
a goal has been scored. This will be a very useful addition to the game
considering all the mistakes that have been made in the past. It’s already had
to be used once during the 2014 tournament, on June 15th, for
France’s second goal against Honduras, during the group stages.
This
championship has been running every four years since 1930 (except in 1942 and
1946 when the competition was put on hold due to the Second World War), so it’s
surprising that this technology has only just been introduced. The nineteen
World Cup tournaments that have taken place so far; have been won by eight
different countries. The host country Brazil, has won five times, Italy four,
Argentina and Uruguay two. England, France and Spain have each won once. The
England final match against West Germany in 1966 being the one that contained
the most goal controversy in the World Cup. England’s third goal hit the
underside of the cross bar and bounced down on the line. Due to language and
communication issues, the Swiss referee awarded the goal, much to the distain
of many. According to the laws of the game, the definition of a goal is when
“the whole ball passes over the goal line.” It seems Goal Line technology would
have been very useful in that situation!
